
“The general concept of “jurisdiction” to adjudicate a domestic relations case actually encompasses three independent jurisdictional requirements: Jurisdiction over the subject matter: The court must have authority to adjudicate the particular matter raised by the pleadings; Jurisdiction over the “res”: A judgment terminating marital or domestic partnership status is valid only if the forum court has “in rem” jurisdiction over the marriage or partnership (the “res”); A judgment adjudicating personal rights and obligations is binding on the parties only if they are subject to the court’s ‘personal jurisdiction.'”
