Cheri Beasley became the first African American woman to serve as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She was appointed in 2019 and served until 2021. Beasley is widely known for her commitment to justice, particularly in ensuring equal access to the legal system for all citizens. Throughout her career, she has focused on making the judiciary more transparent and accessible, advocating for criminal justice reform, and improving public trust in the legal system. Her background as a lawyer, district court judge, and a state supreme court justice gave her the perspective to drive meaningful change in North Carolina’s judicial processes.

Chief Justice Beasley’s tenure was marked by her efforts to improve the efficiency of the courts and her advocacy for fair sentencing practices. She was also a passionate advocate for addressing systemic inequalities in the justice system, particularly those affecting marginalized communities. During her time on the court, Beasley was involved in important decisions regarding voter rights, racial justice, and judicial accountability. After stepping down from the position, she continued her advocacy for social justice, becoming an influential figure in the legal community both in North Carolina and nationally.
