Dennis Banks was a prominent Native American activist and a co-founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM), born on April 12, 1937, in the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota. A member of the Anishinaabe tribe, Banks became deeply involved in advocating for the rights of Native Americans, especially in the 1960s and 1970s when Indigenous communities were fighting for civil rights, sovereignty, and recognition. Banks was instrumental in organizing protests and direct action to bring attention to the systemic issues facing Native peoples, including the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. This 71-day standoff, in which AIM members demanded greater accountability from the U.S. government regarding treaty rights and tribal sovereignty, became a defining moment in the struggle for Indigenous rights.
In addition to his activism, Banks spent time in prison and faced legal battles, but he remained committed to the mission of AIM throughout his life. Beyond the political realm, he was also an advocate for Indigenous culture, language, and youth, promoting pride in Native heritage and self-determination.
