Fred Hampton, born on August 30, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, was a charismatic and visionary leader in the Black Panther Party. Hampton joined the party in 1968 at the age of 19, quickly rising to prominence due to his ability to organize and unite people from diverse backgrounds. He became the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, where he focused on creating community programs, such as free breakfast programs for children and health clinics, aimed at uplifting poor Black communities. Hampton’s leadership was marked by his commitment to revolutionary socialism, racial justice, and the empowerment of marginalized people. He was also instrumental in forging alliances with other activist groups, including Latinx and poor white communities, in the spirit of solidarity.
Fred Hampton’s life was tragically cut short when he was killed on December 4, 1969, at the age of 21, in a predawn raid on his apartment by the FBI and Chicago police. Hampton’s death was part of a larger campaign of repression against Black leaders and movements, as the government viewed him as a threat to the status quo.
