James K. Polk, the 11th President, served from 1845 to 1849. Polk is best known for his expansionist policies, which resulted in the annexation of Texas, the Oregon Territory, and the acquisition of land from Mexico following the Mexican-American War. His belief in Manifest Destiny, the idea that the United States was destined to expand across the North American continent, played a central role in his presidency.
Polk was able to fulfill most of his campaign promises, including reducing tariffs and establishing an independent Treasury. However, his expansionist policies contributed to tensions over the issue of slavery, particularly in the new territories acquired from Mexico, setting the stage for the Civil War. Polk’s presidency is often viewed as one of the most successful in terms of achieving the goals set at the time of his election.
