James Madison, the 4th President, served from 1809 to 1817. Known as the “Father of the Constitution,” Madison was a key figure in drafting and promoting the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. His presidency was largely defined by the War of 1812, fought between the United States and Britain, which was partly the result of British interference with American trade and impressment of sailors. The war ended inconclusively but helped foster a sense of American nationalism.

Madison’s presidency marked the emergence of a more assertive and unified nation. After the War of 1812, Madison supported internal improvements and a stronger national bank, helping to lay the foundation for American infrastructure and economic development. His legacy as a key architect of the Constitution remains one of the most significant in American history.
