Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for her nonviolent struggle to bring an end to the Second Liberian Civil War. Gbowee led a women’s peace movement that brought together Christian and Muslim women to protest and demand an end to the violence that had ravaged their country for years.

Her work was pivotal in the eventual peace negotiations that led to the end of the war and the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as Liberia’s first female president. Gbowee’s advocacy for women’s rights and peace continues to inspire women around the world to engage in peacebuilding efforts and to demand their voices be heard in conflict resolution.
