Richard Nixon, the 37th President, served from 1969 to 1974. Nixon is best known for his role in ending the Vietnam War, his efforts to improve relations with China, and his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Nixon’s foreign policy achievements included his groundbreaking visit to China in 1972, which opened diplomatic relations between the two countries, and his role in the détente movement with the Soviet Union.
However, Nixon’s presidency ended in scandal when he became embroiled in the Watergate scandal, a political cover-up that led to his resignation in 1974. Despite the controversy, Nixon’s domestic policies, including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and his focus on law and order, had lasting impacts on the country. His resignation remains the only time a U.S. president has voluntarily stepped down from office.
