Shirley Chisholm, born on November 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, made history as the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress. Chisholm, the daughter of Caribbean immigrants, was passionate about education and public service from a young age. In 1968, she was elected to represent New York’s 12th Congressional District in the House of Representatives, where she would serve for seven terms.
