Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, served from 1801 to 1809. Prior to his presidency, Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and played a key role in shaping the nation’s philosophy of freedom and democracy. As president, Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the United States and significantly expanded its territory. He also sent explorers Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the Pacific Northwest, furthering American expansion.
Jefferson was a strong proponent of states’ rights and believed in limiting the federal government’s power, a stance that defined much of his political philosophy. He sought to reduce the national debt, lower taxes, and scale back the military. His presidency marked the beginning of the Democratic-Republican dominance in U.S. politics, and he is remembered for his advocacy of individual liberties and agrarian values.
