“The courts of appeal in California have appellate jurisdiction when the superior courts have original jurisdiction and in other causes prescribed by statute. Indeed, although appellate jurisdiction is constitutionally prescribed, the right to appeal is conferred exclusively by statute. . . The California court of appeal is divided into six districts, with some of the districts further divided into separate divisions. Each district court of appeal hears cases from the counties within its jurisdiction. The court of appeal districts are as follows: First District—San Francisco: The First Appellate District includes counties in the Bay Area and all coastal counties from San Mateo to the Oregon border. Second District—Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The Second Appellate District includes Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. Third District—Sacramento. The Third Appellate District includes all counties in the northeastern portion of the state. Fourth District—San Diego, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties. Fifth District—Fresno. The Fifth Appellate District includes Fresno and eight other counties in and adjacent to the San Joaquin Valley. Sixth District—San Jose. The Sixth Appellate District includes San Jose, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties.”
